Central Park establishment

One of the important projects of the Kabul city is the establishment of central park with multifunction activities, which may serve not only for the residents of Dehsabz, but also for greater Kabul, even for all surrounding small cities. There will be access to central greenery easily every day, while the central park serves mainly not only for the weekend resorts for many including visitors from outside, but also as a multifunction center for the region. Plenty of greenery will be provided in the central park and district parks, along artery roads and on the banks of enhanced gullies as well as in the villages surrounding the new city as a necessary condition for healthy urban life.

Dehsabz is located in north of current Kabul city. It has 69º, 36’, 18’’ longitude, 34º, 20’, 42’’ latitude and 1847 (MSL). Dehsabz has the area of 410 Km² and this area is quite even.

Central park is like a triangle with the area of 13 km² inclusive of a couple of small hills. It is located in center of Dehsabz.

Green Belt establishment

In the planning and design of Kabul New City, the provisions for development of green spaces have been considered. The central park with approximately 13 Sq. Km and green belt with approximately 40 Sq. Km are two big projects that will play an important role in creation of a beautiful land escape as well as protection of the environments of the Kabul New City.

Mostly surrounding the east and west parts of the Dehsabz. Along with the construction of Kabul New City in Dehsabz-Barikab, the development of such big green belt around the urban area is very valuable in terms of environmental, economic, cultural and social purposes and will give a unique situation to the Kabul New City in future.

Advantages of a Green Belt around Urban Areas

Filtering and cleaning the air pollution within urban area:
Availability of the greenery inside or around of the urban area has a vital role for filtering and cleaning of the air pollution. The plants cultivated in the urban area produce the fresh oxygen that is essential for living organism life. Meanwhile plants absorb the carbon dioxide as a dangerous gas for human being health. Plants also act as wind breakers that reduce the wind velocity and therefore eliminate the dust coming from outside area to the urban area.

Providing access for informal recreation activities:
With the increasing intensification of urban areas and the loss of open space, including playing fields, the Green Belt can play a very significant role in providing space for informal recreation activities, such as cycling, walking and picnic.

Providing opportunities for outdoor sport and recreation:
The Green Belt offers significant opportunities for formal sport and recreation of the urban residents that do not access to such spaces in urban areas.

Conserving and improving landscapes:
There are notable examples of landscape enhancement initiatives in the Green Belt and urban parks. In the overcrowded urban areas enclosing with the high density of buildings, the green spaces can play a major role in creating and improving landscapes.

Improving damaged and derelict lands:
The focus of many environmental initiatives has been on securing improvement to damaged and derelict land in the Green Belt around the urban areas. Typically, this involves removing a portion of land from the Green Belt in order to generate funds for restoration of a wider area.

Securing nature conservation interests:
There is an increasing range of support mechanisms, such as agro-environment schemes and forestry schemes that can be used constructively to restore damaged landscapes and habitats and to create new areas of habitats, for example expanding new wilderness areas. These schemes can also bring benefits of increased public access.
There are also significant opportunities in the Green Belt to seek compensation for losses of biodiversity that might have been occurred as a result of development and land use change.

Improving natural biodiversity:
Developing a green belt has a significant effect on enhancement of natural biodiversity in vicinity of crowded urban area. Human being’s interventions are the most important of disturbing the biodiversity and natural wild life habitats. So the role of greenery containing a plenty of variety of plants, will improve the wild life situation.

Providing an education resource:
With its great diversity and proximity to such a large center of population, the Green Belt provides an invaluable educational resource. There is potential for organized events and school visits as well as individual exploration.

Improving public health:
There are tangible health benefits to be gained from exercising and relaxing in a natural open space. The benefits may be particularly significant for elderly people, children and people with mental and social problems.

Responding to climate change:
The green spaces offer many opportunities for responding and adapting to climate change and its sequences such as drought. For example, climate change is likely to exacerbate problems of water supply in overcrowded urban areas. A green belt around the Kabul New City could provide space for water storage to adapt to drought years.

A venue for holidays and tourism:
Developing a green belt around the Kabul New City will be potentially attractive to tourists and visitors from outside as well as the Kabul residents. Nowadays there is found very few opportunities for 4 million populations living in Kabul. By development of green belt of Kabul New City, an attractive venue will be provided during the holidays like the weekends as well as Nawrooz festival not only for Kabul residents also for whom coming from neighboring provinces.
